The two big Porsche fears

IMS bearing and coolant pipes, explained.

If you own — or are shopping for — a Porsche with the M96 or M97 engine (the 1997–2008 911 (996/997), Boxster and Cayman), two repairs dominate the conversation. The first is the IMS bearing: the intermediate-shaft bearing can fail with age and low use, and in a worst case it can take the engine with it. The good news is that it's a known, solvable problem — an IMS retrofit replaces the original sealed bearing with an upgraded, serviceable unit and effectively ends the worry.

The second is coolant pipes and fittings. On the V8 Porsches (Cayenne and Panamera), the factory glued plastic coolant pipes in the engine valley that crack and leak with heat and age; the proper fix is to re-pipe them with anodized aluminum. On the water-cooled flat-six, plastic coolant fittings and the Porsche coolant pipe joints get brittle and weep. We inspect, pressure-test and repair both — and we'll always tell you honestly what your specific car needs.

What we do

Complete M96/M97 engine service.

The high-stakes Porsche repairs, done by people who specialize in them.

IMS Inspection

We assess IMS condition and oil analysis so you know where your bearing stands before deciding.

IMS Bearing Retrofit

Replace the original bearing with an upgraded serviceable unit — the permanent peace-of-mind fix.

Coolant Pipe Repair

Cracked plastic coolant pipes re-piped in aluminum; brittle fittings and joints renewed.

Rear Main Seal & Clutch

RMS leaks and clutch/flywheel done while the transmission is out — the smart time to do it.

Pre-Purchase Inspection

Buying a 996/997 or Boxster/Cayman? A documented inspection that checks IMS, bore scoring and leaks.

Bore-Scoring Check

We borescope the cylinders to rule out the other M96/M97 concern before you commit to a car.

M96 / M97 Ownership

Know your engine's weak points.

These flat-sixes are wonderful to drive and genuinely durable when maintained — but a few known issues define ownership. Understanding them (and addressing the IMS proactively) turns a nervous purchase into a confident one.

IMS & Coolant Pipe FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is the Porsche IMS bearing and why does it fail?
The IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing supports a shaft that drives the camshafts on M96/M97 engines. The factory sealed bearing can lose its grease and fail with age and low mileage; if it lets go, debris can destroy the engine. A retrofit to a serviceable bearing removes the risk.
Should I replace my IMS bearing proactively?
For most affected 1997–2008 cars, yes — especially if the clutch or RMS is being done anyway, since the labor overlaps. A proactive retrofit is far cheaper than an engine, and it ends the worry for good.
Which Porsche engines are affected?
The M96 and M97 flat-sixes in the 996 and early 997 911, and the 986/987 Boxster and Cayman, roughly 1997–2008. Not all variants use the same bearing; we identify yours during inspection.
Why do Porsche coolant pipes fail?
On the V8 Cayenne and Panamera, the factory used glued plastic coolant pipes in the engine valley that crack with heat cycling and leak. The permanent fix is re-piping them in anodized aluminum. Plastic coolant fittings on the flat-six get brittle and weep similarly.
How much does IMS or coolant-pipe work cost?
It depends on the model and what's bundled (clutch, RMS, water pump). Independent pricing is well below the dealer, and we give an upfront, itemized quote after inspection so there are no surprises.
Can you inspect a Porsche before I buy it?
Yes — a pre-purchase inspection on a 996/997, Boxster or Cayman checks IMS condition, bore scoring, coolant leaks and more, with a documented report so you buy with confidence.
