Why direct-injection BMWs choke on carbon.

What is BMW carbon build-up?
On direct-injection engines, fuel no longer washes the intake valves, so oil vapor bakes into hard carbon deposits on them over time. Those deposits restrict airflow and cause rough running, misfires and lost power. It's a normal byproduct of the design, not a defect.
What are the symptoms of carbon build-up?
A rough or shaky cold idle, misfire codes, hesitation under acceleration, reduced power and worse fuel economy that creeps in gradually. Many owners don't realize how much they've lost until after a cleaning.
Does walnut blasting really work — or can a spray clean it?
Walnut blasting is the only method that fully removes baked-on intake-valve carbon. Chemical sprays and fuel additives can help upstream but can't strip hardened deposits off the valves. Media blasting cleans them back to bare metal without damage.
How often does a BMW need carbon cleaning?
It varies with driving and engine, but many direct-injection BMWs benefit around 60,000–80,000 miles, then periodically after. Short trips and city driving accelerate buildup.
Which BMW engines are affected?
